Horigatazu is a Japanese style table that is typically inset into a floor. We adapted this concept to provide a dinner table no social or utility infrastructure on a private piece of land in the Adirondacks. The table serves as the main gathering space as is located adjacent to the campfire.
The table is framed with one inch steel skeleton meant to support the heavy table top slab and keep the structure from warping as the ground expands and contracts with weather. Gaps in the floorboards allow water to flow down into a hidden gravel run noof area to keep water from pooling.
The majority of the project was completed over the course of a long weekend, including excavation of the hole, welding the steel skeleton, installing table slab, and framing the seating areas.
